Ras Al-Khaimah (Arabic: رأس الخيمة, Ras al-Khaymah, which means "top of the tent") is one of the emirates as part of United Arab Emirates, located in the eastern Gulf. It is located in the north of the UAE bordering the Gulf of Oman. The city has a population of 263,217 inhabitants (2008 census). The city has two main sections Old Ras Al Khaimah and Nakheel, on either side of the creek. It is served by the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in Al Jazirah Al Hamra.
Ras Al Khaimah was the settlement for several millennia. There are many historical and archaeological sites in the entire emirate dating from different periods, including the ruins of Umm Al Nar civilization (the 3 rd millennium BC). The historic town was known as Julfar. Archaeological evidence has shown that the settlement known as Julfar changed location over time due to silting. Archaeological excavations have unearthed the ruins of a Sassanid-era fortifications that indicate that at the beginning Julfar Shamal area was located not far from the other sites of archaeological interest, such as the Palace of Sheba and the largest tomb Umm Al Nar found in the Arabian Peninsula.
Sources say it was inhabited by Azd Julfar (a branch of the Kahlan tribe, one of the two branches of Qahtani (aboriginal Arabs), the other being Himyar.) In the eighth and ninth centuries AD, the tribe Azd houses were built of wood. In the 18th century Qawasim clan was established in Ras al-Khaimah.
Ras Al-Khaimah is a major oil producer, so he focused on developing industry. It opened its first cement company in the Emirates and early 1970s and is now the largest cement producer of the Emirates. In the 1980s, made the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah Ceramics has become the world's largest manufacturer of ceramics, and Gulf Pharmaceutical Industries (Julphar), the first pharmaceutical company.
Saqr Park is a favorite destination of Ras Al Khaimah. This park is located in Air Port Road, is clean, green and well maintained.
